sent to work the steam winch. This necessitated stitches being put in by the doctor.
I asked the Chief Officer on this occasion to get the Captain to send me to England, it being impossible to work under the existing circumstances.
His reply to this request was that he had already done so, but that the Captain had told him he could not do this; he also added that it was his intention to get me cut off the ship by some means, as it was unlikely the ship would ever lay another cable, but would be used only for repairing that he could get two men for the same or less wages than I was receiving, and that this would suit him better.
The ship left Singapore and proceeded to carry out surveying operations between the Philippine Islands and the Formosa Channel; these operations extending over a period of four weeks.
During this time I was suffering from a troublesome internal complaint, and weakness; being treated by the doctor, who informed me that whilst being fully aware of the state of affairs existing between the Chief Officer and myself, he was powerless to assist me other than by giving me medicine.
This persecution on the part of the Chief Officer continued during the whole of the time.
The ship arrived in Hong Kong on the evening of Febry. 24th and remained in quarantine until the morning of February 25th.
At 9 a.m. on the 25th instant, I received orders from the Chief Officer to fill up the fresh water tanks. This necessitated the taking off of eight manhole doors, one from each tank and each weighing from 80 lbs to 100 lbs. This I would point out is certainly the work of two men, one being required to hold the weight of the door,
